The 2019 edition of the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustang football program ended it's regular season at home Friday night with a 14-7 victory over Carroll High School. The cold fall night brought out the best in both defenses as the battle for the 3A District 2 title was on the line.
The Carroll defense was tough and fought valiantly but Junior Zach Brand opened the scoring in the 2nd quarter with a 13 yard touchdown run. Brand also added a touchdown in the 3rd quarter taking a Ty Walker handoff 6 yards to paydirt. Brand finished the evening with 89 yards on 21 carries and 2 touchdowns.
Black D proved ready as they held Carroll to 6/17 on 3rd down conversions with 3 interceptions (Lawton, Jorgensen and Leggo). Junior Blake Willey led the Mustangs in tackles contributing 10 solos, 7 assists and 1 tackle for loss. 17 Mustangs recorded tackles including 7 solos, 3 assists, 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss from Senior Jayme Augusma. Junior Brody Burger added 5 solo tackles, 3 assists and 1 sack.
The Mustangs brought home their first district title since 2017 and their 5th district title in the last 7 years. This caps-off an amazing season in which we watched DC-G go from 1-8 in 2018 to 8-1 (8-1, 5-0, #10 RPI) in 2019. Our community is very proud of all the hard work and sacrifices the student-athletes and coaches have made to make this season a great success. Many thanks go out to our supporters, school administrators, teachers and parents who made it all possible.
But the Mustangs aren't through yet. The Mustangs earned a first round state playoff game against Harlan (7-2, 4-1, #8 RPI) this Friday November 1st at 7pm in The Stable. Come early and support your Mustangs! Playoff information can be found on the IHSAA website. You may purchase playoff apparel through the DCG Booster Club.
